NIGHT MARKET is a series of dance films that question how we see, create and discover our own cultural identities from the artists’ perspectives as “Third Culture Kids” (TCK). TCKs are people who have spent a significant part of their developmental years outside their parents’ culture. A TCK identity is the epitome of a complicated, hybrid identity that does not fit in with a singular place.
This work is a personal journey of collecting memories, stories and reminders of home to experience belonging and connection. NIGHT MARKET explores culture as a nebulous, amorphous, undefinable collection of personal and shared human experiences that is constantly in flux. The piece embraces the diverse facets of individual identities in hopes that we see people as part of a unified world, a borderless common ground, where cultural identity surpasses the boundaries of countries, nationality, race and ethnicity.
This multidisciplinary collaboration draws on the artists’ ties to Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Los Angeles, and Iceland, integrating western contemporary dance movement, city sounds, remixed Cantonese disco music, and music inspired by Southeast Asian upbringings.
快啲啦 (Faai Di Laa)
Set to train sounds from an ever-changing and fast-paced city, 快啲啦 explores a life in transition - feeling lost, displaced and disconnected from home as we search for belonging and identity.
How are we all connected through shared moments in our journeys? How is culture built from these human interactions? Seek explores Filipino collective values and the concept of “Kapwa,” a shared identity extending beyond the self.
Common Grounds celebrates the mixing of cultures in hopes that we see people as part of a unified world, a borderless common ground, where cultural identity surpasses the boundaries of countries, nationality, race and ethnicity.
